Art meets sustainability

The West Street Market received a new art component on Sept. 13 that enhances the market’s courtyard while promoting the importance of recycling.

City of Reno Councilman David Aiazzi joined Waste Management, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB), local artist Paolo Cividino from Tutto Ferro, merchants from the West Street Market, and local art enthusiasts to celebrate the new art piece.

The new art component is a steel art structure with water-jet cut messages. The piece encloses two recycling receptacles and highlights sustainability. The functional piece promotes waste reduction and helps to alleviate any litter from escaping.

“The art piece was completed funded by a grant so it did not cost the City of Reno anything,” said Councilman Aiazzi.

Waste Management nominated the City of Reno for a Keep America Beautiful (KAB) Target City Award. The award is granted to cities who engage individuals to take greater responsibility for improving their community environments through waste reduction, litter prevention, and beautification. The grant check of $5,000 from KAB was presented to the City of Reno from KAB’s local affiliate KTMB.
